A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion increased in the period preceding Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

Several of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A new rule introduced on Monday would prevent government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
