EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
