Similar to bad weather swept through the northern region the night before, the home side blew Manchester United aside at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Losses for United

This result represented successive Women's Super League setbacks for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since last May, putting them seven points off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capability to manage league and continental football with a small team has been a widely debated subject since they earned a place in the UCL. Looking at the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would fully examine this fortitude. Regrettably for the visitors, they seemed weary from start to finish, the memorable win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had tried to make changes with a several alterations. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought energy, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

The hosts, in opposition, have fewer loading issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

The storm clouds started to accumulate for Skinner and his team from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose energetic forward line controlled and dismantled the opposition with a superb opening period display that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.

Initial Opportunities

Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple forays forward, their direct style giving them choices in the wings but they could not challenge the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, on the other hand, commanded the ball, probing their opponents and trying to draw them out of their structure.

Goals Galore

They turned chances into goals with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th goal from a cross of the campaign.

They increased their cushion with two more goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was permitted to advance through the middle from defense, the play widened for the hosts. The key Casparij collected the pass on the wing before providing a precise ground pass for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a quick turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp allowed the space to strike a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The primary change came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came most likely to score, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were lacking in ideas and failed to record a one shot on goal.

The hosts, in contrast, could have added to their lead when a superb Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to overcome any opponent who placed above them last season, the manager's side now have wins against the Gunners and United to place them in a strong position after the opening fixtures.
